One of the biggest challenges for woodworkers working in slabs larger than a standard planer is getting the slabs completely flat and surfaced. When using a planer, you are not truly flattening the slab, but rather making the thickness of the wood consistent. Even when using a router sled, this can take hours worth of work - and while sometimes the results are satisfactory, many times they are not.
Memphis Woodcraft is now offering slab flattening services using our Slabmizer machine. This machine uses a cutter head on a perfectly flat axis to get your slabs, glue-up tables, or epoxy river tables 100% flat and surfaced on both sides. Once done, you can begin sanding with 120 grit, and move towards final sanding.
We can flatten slabs and tables 5’ wide and up to 13’. Our service is $150.00 an hour to flatten. Most slabs in the 10’ length, and 18-28” width can be flattened in one hour. This can very based on how well the slab dried (movement) and how much material must then be taken off. Larger slabs, and slabs with more twisting and cupping take more time.
Below chart to get a rough idea of flattening time:
• Wood Cookies under 30" -- 30-45 minutes
• Smaller Slabs 14" - 18" wide x 6' - 8' long -- 30-45 minutes
• Large Cookies over 30" -- 1 hour
• Slabs 18" - 28" wide x 10' long -- 1 hour
• Large Slabs 30" - 40" wide x 10' long -- 1.5 hours
• Dining Tables / River Tables -- 1-1.5 hours
• Extra Large Slabs over 40" wide x over 10' long -- 1.5-2 hours +
